Dajabon, Dominican Republic CNN —The United States and other diplomatic missions have begun evacuating personnel from Haiti, as gang violence in the Caribbean nation’s capital Port-au-Prince continues to spiral. US Southern Command said the move was consistent with “standard practice for Embassy security augmentation worldwide.” No Haitians were on board the military aircraft, it added. Another source with knowledge of the operations told CNN there have been at least 12 helicopter evacuation flights into Port-au-Prince over the past three days, all evacuating diplomatic and humanitarian staff. However, shots fired nearby after the last flight’s take off on Sunday have called into question the viability of continuing the evacuation flights, the source said. The World Food Programme suspended its maritime transport services in Port-au-Prince from distributing aid across Haiti due to the instability.

I recently took a solo cruise on the Norwegian Sky from Miami to the Dominican Republic. I worried I might feel trapped on the ship during the three-day sailing, but found the opposite. However, on a recent trip to the Dominican Republic, I thought it might be fun to switch it up and take a cruise down to the Caribbean instead of flying. Taking a solo cruise had always been a bucket list item of mine. So, for only about $300, I booked myself into an interior room on a one-way sailing from Miami to La Romana, Dominican Republic, on the Norwegian Sky.

In his first game back from an eight-month ban, Toney scored from a free kick to help Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 on Saturday and end a skid of five straight Premier League losses. I’m just buzzing to be back and scoring goals and playing for the team. Frank even gave Toney the captain's armband for this game, indicating how important his return is for the west London club. SANTO DOMINGO, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Parts of the Dominican Republic were on high alert on Sunday for possible landslides and flooding after heavy rains the day before displaced thousands and killed at least nine people. Fourteen provinces are on red alert, the Caribbean country's Emergency Operations Center (COE) said in a report on Sunday morning. Nine people died on Saturday after rains caused the wall of a highway tunnel to collapse onto their cars, the National Police said. Authorities have not yet provided a tally of all victims, but local media has reported more victims than the nine killed by the wall collapse. Videos on social media showed rushing water dragging cars down streets and flooded ground floors of buildings.

On Monday night, about 500 people gathered in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan for the fourth-annual gala for the Shed, the $475 million arts center that opened in 2019. It has since hosted a concert series by the director Steve McQueen and Quincy Jones and is currently staging Stephen Sondheim’s final musical, “Here We Are.”For the gala, the Shed’s colossal main hall was transformed into a carpeted room with tables spread among low, blobby couches. “I feel like I’m in NASA,” one guest said, adding that the venue felt big enough to accommodate a rocket launch. The evening honored M&T Bank, which has partnered with the center since it began, and the Santo Domingo family, who are longtime supporters. The crowd included the ballerina Misty Copeland, who is also a board member; the designer Wes Gordon; and the hip-hop duo the Dragon Sisters, who are part of the Shed’s Open Call program, which commissions projects from emerging artists in New York.

By Lisandra ParaguassuBRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazil plans to expand its railway network with a 40 billion reais ($8 billion) fund that will be financed by removing discounts given to rail companies by previous government contracts, Transport Minister Renan Filho told Reuters. The Federal Audit Court is now reviewing those extensions after the government of President Lula da Silva disputed the discounts. "We think that some procedures adopted in the contracts are unacceptable," Filho said in an interview on Friday. According to the government, the companies owe an additional 40 billion reais ($8.1 billion) in unpaid concession payments. The government's goal is to have 40% of Brazil's freight, which is mostly iron ore, transported by rail, up from 17% today.

VATICAN CITY, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Transsexuals can be godparents at Roman Catholic baptisms, witnesses at religious weddings and receive baptism themselves, the Vatican's doctrinal office said on Wednesday, responding to questions from a bishop. A person in a same-sex relationship could also be a witness at a Catholic wedding, the office said, citing current Church canonical legislation which contained no prohibition against it. The Brazilian bishop sought guidance on whether a same-sex couple who had adopted a child or obtained it from a surrogate mother could have that child baptized in a Catholic ceremony. The response said that for the child of a same-sex couple to be baptized, there had to be "a well-founded hope that it would be educated in the Catholic religion". There was a similarly nuanced response to a question whether a person in a same-sex relationship could be a godparent at a Church baptism.
